What is llms.txt?
A proposed standard (llmstxt.org) for a Markdown file at yourwebsite.com/llms.txt. It gives AI tools a short summary of your site and links to the pages that matter most, so they don't have to piece it together from full HTML pages.
What goes in an llms.txt file?
An H1 with your site or product name, a one-line summary in a blockquote, optional detail, then H2 sections with lists of links in the form - [Title](URL): note. A section called Optional holds links that can be skipped when a shorter version is needed.
Do AI crawlers read llms.txt?
Support is still limited. It's a proposal, not a standard that the major AI crawlers have committed to, so treat it as a low-cost extra. Making your content readable without JavaScript and allowing AI search crawlers in robots.txt matter more.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells crawlers where they may go. llms.txt describes your site's content. They work alongside each other.
